Looking At

Location:Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States
Thursday, September 30
WOO HOO! we finally got a real digital camera!!

yup, we spent all day yesterday driving all over town, looking for a real cam for the balloon fest tomorrow... long day of comparison shopping at pawn shops, camera shops, even thrift stores...

the last place we went was a cam shop at the mall across the street from us (after spending some seven hours running all over town) and the guy was great and got us exactly what we wanted... we just told him our requirements, he thought a long moment, reached in the case and pulled out one cam and it turned out to be perfect...

so, firstly, we want to loudly say BIG THANKS to Wess, the store manager at the Cottonwood Mall Ritz Camera!
if we had started there, we could have saved ourselves several hours of driving all over town... he was a huge help, very knowledgable, no pushy sales, a real pleasure to do business with!
he even let us test compatibility with our psion... he took a pic of us on his card, i popped the card in, and it loaded right up...

ok, so, the camera we got is the Nikon Coolpix 2000...

everything we wanted (like cf, jpg format, auto-timer, optical zoom, video out) and even does video clips in quicktime format and can make thumbnails of the pics...

the next best we were considering was at target, not nearly as good, for $150...

it is a discontinued model, and we bought their damage protection plan, he claims we can hit it with a hammer and bring it back...

and we already have two 128mb cf cards for it... (we currently use them in our mp3 players, so, now they will have to do double duty until we get some even bigger cards...)

but, enough talk, how about some pics, eh?

i got up at 7:30am (after staying up until 4 playing with the thing) and went downstairs and started getting pics and vids of some of the mountains and balloons and stuff...

so, to start with, how about that balloon i took pics of yesterday... it went by again today, so, it makes for an excellent comparison example...

firstly, here is probably the best pic i got of it with the dreameye...

that was the old and busted, now behold the new hotness...

and, a close-up using the tightest optical zoom (3x)...

and those are on the lowest quality setting (1:16 compression) and smallest size (vga, 640x480)...

and here is a video of it as it vanished from site [QuickTime]...

now, since this page is pretty heavy already, i am not going to post a bunch of pics here, and i have not yet started using the thumbnails feature it offers...
sooo, here is where the rest of our first pics and vids are from last night and this morning...
i am still uploading stuff and probably will be all day...

mornings around here are gorgeous with the balloons all over the place and the mist over the mountains and across the city, so, the pics are very much worth taking a look at... there are also a couple vids from last night, like coming down the hill from rio rancho, looking out over abq, which we thought turned out very cool...

currently, there are pics in all three quality settings, and i took one huge one at the max size and max quality to show what the best this thing can do is (at least, in my unskilled hands)... it is nearly 600k... dpp will not even attempt to load it...

i see space becoming an issue very soon... however, we will probably be using the lowest quality and smallest size for 99% of the pics...

btw, speaking of space issues...
these vids are like 4-6mb each, they will NOT stay for long (only a few hours), see them while you can, save them if you ever want to see them again, they will be deleted before tomorrow... we are keeping a copy of everything on videotape, but, not the files themselves, we just don't have the room...
and remember that they will be trickling in probably all day... i am uploading something like 30mb of vids at this very moment... on dial up :( (so far, it has been taking about 40 minutes each...)

as you may have noticed, i have created a special directory for all these test pics and vids (/2004-sept-NEWCAMERA)... starting tomorrow, pics and vids will be going in a /2004-oct directory and all balloon fest pic will go in /2004-oct-AIBF, and there should be tons of them as i expect the next ten days we will be taking hundreds of pics of the balloons... who knows how many will be kept, but, the uploading will be probably almost constant...

we got our first DreamEye on may 25th, 2002, and have used it to take literally hundreds of pics, it has served us well and we loved it so much we even bought a second one a few months ago... but, owning and using them has taught us a lot about digital cams and taking pics, and we simply outgrew it...

this day is way overdue...

Wednesday, September 29
  HA! got one!

i said i'd be ready next time and at about 9am i walked out on the balcony and had to dash in to grab a camera...

and then it was gone...

but, the Albuquerque International Balloon Festival starts friday morning!
expect lots of pics!

  star wars dvd notes

nothing in-depth, just going to c/p the notes i took of what we saw as we watched the three movies...

this is just about the dvd/transfer quality, not about any changes to the movies (there are countless sites for that)... nor comparisons to the laserdiscs or "did they fix [insert notorious problem] yet?" stuff (short version is sometimes they did, sometimes they didn't, again, there are many sites out there that cover that issue)...

if you want a full review, google it, there are plenty out there...

anyway, here is what i saw...

star wars
colors are very oversaturated- at times it is so bad, it reminds me of the old tnt colorized movies

things change colors in the frame sometimes- see c3po in the first desert scenes and the rocks in the background when the tusken raider jumps onto the bantha

and is that really bad edge enhancement where the dunes meet the sky as the camera pans early in the first desert scenes?

audio does REALLY funny/awful things- mainly dialogue, starts with leia before tarkin

empire strikes back
looks very good, hella better than star wars- but, the colors are also a little oversaturated on this one

return of the jedi
looks largely untouched, replete with matte lines, bad colors in some matted shots- in fact, MOST of the matte shots look really bad

again, a bit oversaturated colors

the image is not as sharp and clear as the other two- even grainy at times

probably the worst looking of the three

the empire strikes back is the clear winner here... it looked and sounded pretty much excellent...
the first movie had the really bad color issues and the sound was downright horrible in spots and return of the jedi had so many unfixed terrible-looking matte jobs that it was quite distracting...

btw, that sound issue on the first film is widely reported and seems totally inexcusable, i would have to pop in a laserdisc and see if it sounded that bad before... but, i sure don't remember it sounding like that, yet i DO remember where a couple audio problems have always been, such as "into the garbage shoot fly boy!", which still sounds just as bad as it always has... so, i feel pretty safe trusting my memory on this one, star wars has never sounded so bad...

an english lesson for the internet age

this was in the march 2004 issue of Nybble, and it has taken me this long to post it...

Hey, since we're now living in the time of e-mail and the more common use of the written language, it is time for an English lesson, mmmkay.

So, with tongue firmly in cheek, here are some rules to keep in mind when using the Queen's Engerlish:

  1. Verbs has to agree with their subjects.
  2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
  3. And don't start a sentence with a conjunction.
  4. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.
  5. Avoid cliches like the plague. (They're old hat).
  6. Always avoid annoying alliteration.
  7. Be more or less specific.
  8. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are (usually) unnecessary.
  9. Also, too, never, ever use repetitive redundancies.
  10. No sentence fragments. No comma splices, run-ons are bad too.
  11. Contractions aren't helpful and shouldn't be used.
  12. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos.
  13. Do not be redundant; do not use more words than necessary; it's highly superfluous.
  14. One should never generalize.
  15. Comparisons are as bad as cliches.
  16. Don't use no double negatives.
  17. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.
  18. One-word sentences? Eliminate.
  19. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.
  20. The passive voice is to be ignored.
  21. Eliminate commas, that are, not necessary. Parenthetical words however should be enclosed in commas.
  22. Never use a big word when a diminutive one would suffice.
  23. Kill all exclamation points!!!!
  24. Use words correctly, irregardless of how others use them.
  25. Understatement is probably not the best way to propose earth shattering ideas.
  26. Use the apostrophe in it's proper place and omit it when its not needed.
  27. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "I hate quotations. Tell me what you know."
  28. If you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times: resist hyperbole; not one writer in a million can use it correctly.
  29. Puns are for children, not groan readers.
  30. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.
  31. Even if a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.
  32. Who needs rhetorical questions?
  33. Exaggeration is a million times worse than understatement.
  34. Proofread carefully to see if you any words out.

NINE hot-air balloons from my balcony

yes, at 8am this morning, there were five visible out the window from where i sit on the couch now, so, i went out on the balcony and counted a total of nine...
none of them were very close, but, what a sight as they just hang there in the sky...
i tried to take a couple pics, but, no chance with the dreameye...

and it seems to me i may be better off waiting to take pics until october 1st to 10th, when the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta takes place just down the street from us...
said to be the largest hot-air balloon event in the world... i saw a panoramic poster of the event in a poster shop the other day...

and, yes, it is literally just up the street from us, so, i think it is time to quit putting off the purchase of a real digital camera because these things are going to be filling the sky all around us...

here are a couple pics...
keep in mind that these things are, on average, from 30 to 60 feet tall and there are HUNDREDS of them! (in 2000, there were over a thousand balloons!)

these pics were taken from TravelManiac Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta and they have a lot more pics worth seeing...

and here are some more links i collected as i looked around for info this morning...
i have never been here for this event before, but, i gather that the highlights include many balloons in odd shapes and sizes, the "mass ascension", presumably all the balloons lifting off at once, and the "Glowdeo", a night-time event with lit-up balloons...
so, keep that stuff in mind when following the links...

  tongue-in-cheek about out-of-character

this is from the help files of Achaea - Dreams of Divine Lands, a text MUD we are contemplating throwing large portions of our life away to...

it is a role-playing-required game, though, and i have not done that sort of thing since i was a teenager, and am not sure i am in any hurry to again, it can get goofy... (you should see some of the rp weirdos on pso... they talk to their mags and everything...)

anyway, so, i have been just sitting in the newbie channel a bit the last few days, watching how things work, and today someone was talking about their internet connection lagging, so, someone says "excuse me, but, it seems you need to read HELP INSANITY"...

so, i had a look and it is kinda' clever...
btw, i can't help but hear peter jones reading this...

15.6.1 Insanity

Adventurers are a special group of people. Sarapis has given to adventurers both strengths and weaknesses that denizens do not have. One of the weaknesses to which an Adventurer may fall prey is insanity.

The first sign of insanity is when the poor victim starts to use words that are meaningless to others, such as talking about "my PC" or "being online" as if everybody else should know what is meant!

If the insanity is allowed to go unchecked, the victim may begin to believe that the imaginary world is the real world and that Achaea does not really exist.

Some fancy that qualities of their own existence, such as their health or life experience are nothing more than numbers!

Chilling, isn't it?

Most distressing of all is when the insanity appears more akin to a case of possession by some vile, alien creature. Victims in this final stage may call life a game, and imagine that they are nothing more than playing pieces in that game, controlled by some greater being.

If you've been asked to read this scroll, consider this: have you been showing signs of insanity?
Are you willing to take the first step and admit that you are ill and in need of a cure?

To those of you who see others suffering: insanity is a disease of the mind. Those afflicted with it should not be ridiculed, as this tends to aggravate the condition. Speak to them privately. Show them concern and understanding. Remind them of their true reality and home here, in Achaea!

Nobody wants to see insanity o'erwhelm us all.

Saturday, September 11
my annual 9/11 post that i think EVERYONE should read

every year around 9/11 i have posted this in various places... now i have a blog to post it to, and i decided to post it early this year...

here is the latest version of it...
for those who have read it before, there is a chronology fix and i added a follow-up thread that i had somehow missed before that has important info...

in the Dreamcast Technical Pages message board archives (now known as the SEGA Forum), i found this thread about a regular of their board, Thomas Vazquez, aka "z167704", with whom they had shared many hours playing PSO, Quake, and other Dreamcast online games, turning up missing right after the september 11th attacks... in fact, they had played Daytona USA with him the night before...

it all makes for a rather long read, but, this is some heart-wrenching, unbelievable stuff and there is not exactly a happy ending here...

i think the whole ordeal is relevant to everyone...

it all starts with this thread

and then, on september 25th

october 12th, aftermath and more of what the future may be like

and you could have a look at this

and this all has to do with a subject i yell about quite a bit...
the people who say that we should all "get off the internet and go out and meet some REAL people" or that you do not have "real" relationships on the internet...

tell THESE people about "real" and how these are not really "real people" they know and how they don't really have "real relationships" between each other...

links - The Holy Trilogy on dvd, two more 9/11 links, and a few various

these links came from an AGSF (?) thread titled "Star Wars DVD LG did not do a good job on remaster thing sound"...

ours have been pre-ordered for quite some time, just waiting for launch day, with a gift certificate given to us for just this set, so, george technically got none of our money...
besides, we still treasure our near-mint Star Wars Trilogy Definitive Collection LaserDisc Box Set of the original theatrical cuts of the films, and even have the Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition LaserDisc Box Set, the now intermediary 1997 versions, also not available on dvd (even though, with all the dumb stuff added in ANH and the dumb stuff already there in ROJ, only ESB is worth watching, but, VERY worth it)...

anyway, on to the links...

start your morning with a heart attack

so, it was an hour or so ago, somewhere between 8:30a and 9a, i guess...

i am standing at my espresso machine, waiting for it to brew, and i look up out the kitchen window and there is this HUGE blue hot air balloon... i mean, this thing was CLOSE and LOW... MASSIVE...
it looked like maybe the pilot lived here and he was looking for a parking spot...

i picked up my jaw, dashed into the bedroom, "mary! mary! hurry! come look! you gotta' see this! it's better than goofy golf!"
poor girl probably got to sleep about 5a, but, she managed to stumble to the window, i look out the living room window and there is another balloon a little ways out, in the place where i usually see a balloon or two in the early mornings (somewhere around here, you can take rides between like 7a and 10a)...
i go look out our bedroom window, and AAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!, one very low, floating right above our bedroom! dark dark blue, almost black, HUGE, and just hanging there almost right above my head...

then i come to my senses...

so, i run and grab my camera, run out on the balcony, point at the blue one and beep beep beeeeep...
so, i run inside, and grab her camera, run back out to the balcony, the blue one is seriously getting away and is nowhere near as close, turn the camera on, sight it up, and beep beep beeeeeep...

run inside, fire up the software, hook up the cam...
EMPTY???!!! other one, also empty!!

to the cabinet, stuff falls out, dig up the AAA's, dump the dead ones on the floor, load up two new ones, run outside and...

run down the stairs, look west...

run around the building, look east...

look around for an animal or something to kick...

(nothing i feel like getting in trouble for, anyway...)

go back upstairs, mary is back in bed, sound asleep, i look out every window, nothing...

like i had only dreamed it...

so now i sit typing this, going and looking out the windows every couple minutes, drinking my espresso, which is cold after all that...

next time, dammit, next time...

our Yahoo! Photos and Phantasy Star Online pics

seems most of the albums in our yahoo photos have been set to 'private' for months, no idea how it got that way...

it is all now fixed, which means that our PSO pics are also now accessible again... i saw that someone tried to search for them, and got no results, which is what led me over there in the first place... we played a lot and took hundreds of screenshots, though, after some very turbulent times with yahoo photos, i am pretty sure that many of them are no longer in there... someday i hope to move all our PSO snapshots into our webspace, organized by date like our photos but, that is a huge job...
